My father died of cancer three months after I was born. Within two years of his death, creditors auctioned most of his assets, and our family home was destroyed by fire. With nine mouths to feed and no husband, my mother had to place us in an orphanage. Feelings of abandonment and rejection, lack of male role models and ongoing sexual abuse left me a confused and wounded little boy.
At the age of seven, I came to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, but the sexual abuse and emotional wounds left confusion in my heart. These experiences set me up for the choice I would make as a young man to enter the gay lifestyle. Many years later, I heard God’s call and realized, as a prodigal son, that my heavenly Father loved me. My walk away from the lifestyle was slow but progressive.
An ex-gay ministry of Exodus International became the support I needed to stay faithful. Later I received further healing as I attended Love In Action (Memphis, TN), a residential program for men and women overcoming homosexuality. After returning to Raleigh, The Watered Garden provided the relationships I needed to get integrated into the Body of Christ.
I heard God's call again, this time to tell my story of His love, forgiveness and redemption. As I followed in obedience He raised up Beyond Imagination. In April of 1996, Beyond Imagination held its first support group meeting for men who struggle with homosexuality. That same year, God favored me by bringing me a very special woman, Ann Marie, to be my wife. We were married in June of 1997. His healing and redemptive power are still being lived out in my life. I am not the man I used to be and I am not yet the man I want to be. I continue to grow and change. God has healed, redeemed, restored and transformed my life.
The ministry name comes from Ephesians 3:20. God can do beyond our imagination in a life given over to Him.
